University of Science & Technology Meghalaya
The Humble Journey from 1 Computer & 4 Students to University and beyond โ building institutions from KG to UG to PG to PhD.
Mahbubul Hoque, the Chancellor of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya and Chairman, Education Research and Development Foundation (ERDF), Guwahati is a visionary educationist and an avowed entrepreneur who has carved a niche in the north-eastern region of India in the field of technical and higher education within a very short period. A winner of several outstanding awards, he has won the minds and hearts of many by virtue of his humility and simplicity, with the strong belief that every citizen of this country has the right to education.
Born on December 1, 1973 in a rural family of a remote village Barcharra, Purbogool, PS Patharkandi, Dist. Karimganj, Assam, Mahbubul Hoque had a turbulent life since his early childhood. To maintain his studies at a very early age, he started tutoring young children and even sold home-grown vegetables in the local market.
Despite all such difficulties, he secured 2nd rank in matriculation from Karimganj, completed his 10+2 from GC College Silchar, earned a B.Sc. (Hons) with star marks, and ultimately completed his Masters in Computer Science (MCA) from the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in the year 2000, securing 1st Class 2nd Rank.
Though he had lucrative job offers from multinationals within the country and abroad, he returned to his native region after completing his MCA with a strong commitment to guide underprivileged rural talents and contribute to the science and technology education of North East India.
With only one computer and four students, carrying just โน85 in his pocket in February 2001, Mahbubul Hoque started a computer training centre under the Manipal Group. Within 5 years the centre became the 2nd largest in the country, receiving the Excellence Award five consecutive times from Manipal.
